Choose Tasker if you want to build anything
Tasker can do more than any other app here: variables, loops, scripts, a large plugin ecosystem, and widgets. That power comes with a learning curve it's known for. Its AI Generator, in the stable release since version 6.5.9, drafts tasks and profiles from a description, but you supply your own Gemini or OpenRouter API key, and you'll still be working in Tasker's editor to change what it made.
Choose MacroDroid if you want a guided editor
MacroDroid's trigger, action and constraint model is easier to pick up than Tasker's, and it has templates other people have shared. The free version is limited to five macros and shows ads. Its AI Macro Builder works from inside ChatGPT or Claude: you describe the macro to one of those assistants and the MacroDroid connector builds it.
Choose Modes & Routines if you have a Galaxy phone and simple needs
It's already on your phone, it's free, and it reaches settings a downloaded app can't. It only exists on Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, and what it offers depends on the model and One UI version.
Choose Rulomi if you'd rather write it than build it
You type something like “every weekday at 10 pm turn on Do Not Disturb and set media volume to 20%”, and Rulomi shows the trigger, conditions and numbered actions it understood before anything can run. The parser runs on the phone. If you allow it, wording the parser can't place goes to the optional AI planner, with no account or API key to set up. Instructions it only partly understands are explained and can't be enabled, so it doesn't guess.
Each routine can tell you why it didn't run, Activity records every run and what stopped it, and a routine can put your settings back afterwards. Your routines stay in private storage on the phone; read the privacy policy for exactly what the AI planner sends.
What Rulomi doesn't do yet
- Location triggers, or naming a specific Wi-Fi network
- Variables, scripts or plugins
- Replying to messages or pressing notification buttons, which it leaves out on purpose
- More than one “or” group in a routine's conditions
