Getting a routine working again

RULOMI 0.8.0 · CRAFTEDPXL, LLC · INFO@CRAFTEDPXL.COM
Most routines that stop are being held back by Android, and the app can usually tell you why. Open the routine and tap Why isn't it working? first. If that doesn't explain it, look for your problem below, or email info@craftedpxl.com.

Start with Why isn't it working?

Every routine's page has this check. It runs on the phone, sends nothing, and offers the fix where there is one. It looks at:

  • whether the routine is paused, and whether its device or app is still chosen, paired or installed
  • each kind of access the routine needs, such as notification access, Do Not Disturb access or modifying system settings
  • when the next alarm is due, for a time routine, and whether precise timing is on
  • whether event monitoring is running, for a routine that waits for something to happen
  • battery optimisation, and whether Android has been delaying or stopping Rulomi several times in a row
  • the routine's last run, if it was skipped or didn't finish

Activity has every run with what happened and why, including ones that were skipped because a condition wasn't true or blocked because access was missing.

A time routine runs a few minutes late

Precise timing is optional special access. Without it Android batches alarms and can delay a run by up to an hour. Turn it on from the routine's troubleshooter or from Settings. A run that arrives five minutes or more late says so in Activity.

Routines that wait for an event stopped running

Charging, battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, headphone, sensor, screen-rotation, screen on and off, and app routines need event monitoring, which shows as an ongoing notification, or from Android 13 in the active apps list in Quick Settings when Rulomi's notifications are off. Opening Rulomi starts it again. If it keeps stopping, either it's being stopped from that active apps list or your phone's battery manager is ending it. Let Rulomi run unrestricted in Android's battery settings. After three late or missed runs, or three restarts of the monitor, Rulomi puts a card on Home that links there.

Force-stopping Rulomi halts every routine until you open the app again.

A notification routine stopped

Android sometimes disconnects an app's notification access without telling it. The troubleshooter spots this. Turning Rulomi's notification access off and on again in Android's settings reconnects it.

A volume or ringer change didn't happen

From Android 17, an app can change volumes and the ringer mode only while it's open or monitoring, so a time routine that runs with Rulomi closed can be refused. Activity records it when that happens. Silent and vibrate, and the ring and notification volumes, also need Do Not Disturb access, because Android treats them as Do Not Disturb states. A volume set while the stream is muted is kept and applies once it's unmuted.

A shake, face-down or light routine doesn't fire

Motion and light are read only while the screen is on. Android stops delivering the accelerometer once the screen is off, and Rulomi doesn't hold a wake lock to keep it going. A shake in your pocket does nothing, and a phone turned over with the screen off is noticed when the screen next comes on. The first reading after you enable a sensor routine records the state without firing.

Rulomi didn't understand what I wrote

The on-device parser knows a fixed set of English phrases. Give times as 10 pm or 22:00, separate actions with “and”, “then” or a comma, and put conditions at the end after “if” or “only if”. The home page has instructions you can paste as they are. With the AI planner on, wording the parser can't place goes to the planner. An instruction that's only partly understood can't be enabled, and the message says which part wasn't.

The AI planner says my plans are used up

Every installation gets five free AI plans. After that, routines are planned on the phone only, and everything the parser recognises still works. Rulomi Plus adds 100 more, and the full recipe library, for a one-time payment. You can switch the planner off any time in Settings.

Moving to a new phone

Export your routines in Settings → Your routines and import the file on the new phone. They arrive paused, so you can check each one before switching it on. A notification routine that names an app the new phone doesn't have says so on its page. Run history stays on the old phone. Android's own backup and device transfer don't include Rulomi, so nothing moves unless you export it.

Removing your data

Your routines and run history live only in Rulomi's private storage. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage, removes them. If you used the AI planner, our server keeps a count of plans used against a random install ID, which it deletes 400 days after the last plan. The privacy policy has the details, and you can ask us about it at info@craftedpxl.com.

Contacting us

Email info@craftedpxl.com. It helps if you include:

  • your phone's make and model, and its Android version
  • Rulomi's version, shown under Rulomi in Android's Settings → Apps
  • the routine's description as you typed it
  • what Activity and Why isn't it working? say about it

A backup file holds your routines in plain text, including any Bluetooth device names and the words a notification routine looks for, so send one only if you're happy to share that.
